Former Dutch Colony
Like in all other Southamerican countries the official language is not Spanish or Portuguese. After Suriname became independent from the Netherlands in 1975 Dutch is still the official language. But with one of the worlds most ethnically diverse population you will hear many other languages. Fortunately English is also very well spoken in Suriname. Young people and everybody who is working in hospitality is familiar with English.
Diversity of cultures
During its history Suriname attracted people from all over the world. Nowadays this diversity is to be found in religion, food, festivities and appearance. Suriname has a very young population and a density of 4 inhabitants per km2 (around 600.000 inhabitants in 2022).
