This area, named after the Marowijne River - a typical Amazon river, borders the neighboring country of French Guiana. Albina, the 'port town' of the Marowijne, is very busy. The residents of the Marowijne River come here with traditional vessels to collect their supplies. The fascinating river is also called the water highway of the east. The many brown villages along the Marowijne are largely dependent on supplies by canoe. Numerous sulas (rapids) are crossed along the way and everyone has to get out to drag the canoe through them.
If you want to experience this yourself, you can choose from one of the challenging expeditions that start in this area, such as the Three Rivers- and the Tebutop Expedition.
