Hi Suzette,
We had a fantastic trip and thoroughly enjoyed what Suriname has to offer. Besides beautiful and breathtaking nature, warm people, and lots of delicious food, the fried banana with peanut sauce was definitely the all-time favorite.
For the traveler who likes going a bit off the beaten track, is flexible, and isn't afraid of a little adventure, this country has a lot to offer. The first few days in Paramaribo were warm, impressive, and surprising. You can see the highlights in two days, but Paramaribo offers more if you know your way around a bit; for instance, we ended up in a jazz club where young, but especially old, were dancing their hearts out.
Our jungle trek was fantastic; going back to basics with few amenities allowed us to see nature even more in its essence. We also found Palulu very beautiful with the 'Cola Creek', the evening walk, and the delicious food from Donavan. The canoeing and the hike were physically very manageable, and the overnight stays were in breathtaking spots along the Suriname River, making you willing to put up with a very thin mattress or a significant dip in it. Instead of showering, we started the day with a dip in the Suriname River.
The third part of our trip consisted of several overnight stays at the former plantations Frederiksdorp and Peperpot. We found the former particularly beautiful, partly due to the offered bird excursion and historical tour. We saw beautiful birds there and 'water chickens', or caimans, that simply live in the pond on the grounds. Peperpot is beautiful, but we actually found it to be the least impressive location. Perhaps we couldn't handle the luxury at that moment. The nature park where you can cycle is enormous, but with a guide you could get much more out of it, and we felt that was a missed opportunity.
We have only seen a small part of this fascinating country with so much history, natural beauty, and warm people. A huge hug from Damaris and Anja for Suriname, and also for you, Suzette, who translated our wishes so well.
Greetings,
Anja and Damaris
