Travel information

Guyana and Kaieteur Falls
Guyana is the neighboring country of Suriname and for many an unknown travel destination. The former British colony is located in the so-called Guiana Shield and offers endless tropical rainforest with vast mountain ranges, raging rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. Guyana's most famous waterfall is the largest single-drop waterfall in the world: the Kaieteur Falls (250 meters).

Guyana is named after the Indian word for “land of many waters” and has a history as a plantation colony. After the declaration of independence, the country has had a very turbulent history, resulting in minimal development of tourism. Guyana is the only country in South America where English is the official language.

Guyana is definitely worth a visit for nature lovers, bird watchers and adventurers.

Note: For this excursion you will need a multiple-entry visa and proof of yellow fever vaccination.

Upon arrival in the capital, check in at your hotel and find a restaurant for dinner.

Day 2 - City tour and visit to the Kaieteur Falls

After breakfast, you'll take a city tour of Georgetown and visit Stabrook Market. The capital, Georgetown, was previously called Stabroek, after the Dutch West India Company's chief administrator, Lord of Stabroek (Nicolaes Geelvinck). During the Dutch colonial era, Stabroek was occupied several times by the British. The areas were finally ceded to the United Kingdom in 1815 and merged into British Guiana in 1831. Throughout the walk, you'll find references to the Dutch period. The name of the large market near the harbor, for example, is "Stabroek." Stabroek Market and one of the national newspapers in Guyana is called The Stabroek News

A domestic flight will take you to Kaieteur Falls. The waterfall is located in an area that has been declared a nature reserve; Kaieteur National Park On the Potaro River. The largest drop is 226 meters high, measured from its fall over the cliff. After arriving, you can admire the waterfall and its cascading waters from several different locations. You'll also take short walks through the beautiful uninhabited rainforest. After visiting this impressive site, you'll fly back to Georgetown, arriving in the late afternoon. In the evening, you'll have dinner at a local restaurant and possibly some more sightseeing. The program will be further tailored to your wishes in consultation with the guide.

Depending on the required number of participants on site, it may be decided to alternate the program of day 2 and day 3.
