They were once recruited as indentured servants in British India (modern India) to work on the plantations when slavery was abolished. There was a lot of interest in emigration to escape poverty and the oppressive caste system. The enterprising Hindustani community eventually grew into an influential and relatively prosperous population group.

In the photo the Baba and Mai monument. It was unveiled in Paramaribo in 1993 in memory of the first British Indian immigrants.
