Travel information
A very varied tour for anyone who really wants to get to know Suriname well and see the great diversity of landscapes, but in a comfortable way.
Paramaribo
The base in Paramaribo is a comfortable hotel with a nice swimming pool and a large garden. Because you return here several times, you get the pleasant feeling of 'coming home' and you only travel with manageable luggage during the multi-day trips. You can leave your other luggage at the hotel. The hotel is within walking distance of the city center where you can experience a lot during the day and have a delicious meal in the evening.
Various locations in the coastal area and inland
During your visit to the Commewijne region, a guide will tell you more about the shared history of Suriname and the Netherlands. This trip also focuses on the pristine and stunning natural beauty. You'll visit the Bigi Pan Nature Reserve, home to a wealth of birds, and travel to both inhabited and uninhabited parts of the jungle. You'll be a guest of the Saramaccan people, learning about their culture and how they live according to customs passed down from their ancestors in Africa.
Amatopo
The pristine rainforest is yours to explore during your stay at the new, luxury Amatopo Rainforest Retreat. This hidden gem is nestled in the southwestern jungle of Suriname. Nestled in the heart of pristine nature, the retreat is a true paradise for nature lovers and animal enthusiasts. A wonderful place to relax and recharge.

Travel schedule
Day 1 - Arrival in Suriname
Day 2 – Paramaribo
Day 3 to 6 - Frederiksdorp Plantation
In the morning you will be picked up from Hotel Torarica and you will leave with the guide via the Wijdenbosch bridge towards the Commewijne district. The Javanese and Hindustani communities are well represented in this district. The guide will tell you more about the history and development of this area. We will visit the Open Air Museum in Fort Nieuw Amsterdam and the monument at the former sugar factory Mariënburg to get a complete historical picture. After an educational day you will be dropped off at the jetty of Mariënburg where you will take the boat crossing to Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp. This former plantation and police station now houses a comfortable resort. During your stay you can visit the story museum and take the historical interactive walk through the forest on the adjacent grounds. Other examples are a boat trip to spot dolphins and during the nesting season of the sea turtles you can go on a night adventure to the nesting beaches. During your stay at Frederiksdorp you can also cycle, for example eastwards to Kroonenburg, or do a roti workshop with Mrs Dipai. All excursions can be booked optionally.
At Frederiksdorp you will also have plenty of time to relax by the pool or stretch out in the hammock with or without a book. On the last day you will be picked up again at the Mariënburg pier for the return journey to Paramaribo.
Day 7 to 9 - Anaula Nature Resort
In the early morning you will leave the hotel by bus towards Atjoni. The canoe is waiting there and will take you further to Anaula Nature Resort. The shelter is built on an island in the Ferulasi Falls. You will spend the night in comfortable 2-person lodges with a veranda where you can laze around and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The resort has a swimming pool with sun deck. In the evenings you can have a drink at the bar. Anaula is located near the Saramaccan village of Gunsi, and the larger village of Nieuw Aurora is also close to the resort. Here is a mission post with, among other things, a school and a medical post. During a visit to the villages you will become acquainted with the age-old traditions that the ancestors brought with them from Africa. You will also make several trips by canoe on the river and a forest walk with explanations about the flora and fauna of the rainforest. On the last day you will leave for the city again and you will have a free evening in Paramaribo.
Day 10 to 12 - Bigi Pan
After breakfast you will be picked up by a van for a long trip to the West of Suriname. Arriving in Nickerie you will transfer to a boat for a trip to the Bigi Pan nature reserve. You will stay here at the Akira Overwater Resort. This resort consists of a group of lodges on the water that are connected by jetties. From your balcony you have a view over the lake where you can enjoy the sunrise and sunset.
During your stay at Akira you will take a trip across the lake and through the mangrove area. You will be able to spot a variety of birds. Many waders, herons, but also birds of prey and woodpeckers feel completely at home here. With a bit of luck you will also come across scarlet ibises that are beautifully dark red in colour due to eating crabs and shrimps. Small caimans are also regularly spotted. On the day of departure you will be taken by boat back to the jetty where the van is waiting for you to take you to Groningen, where you will stay the next few days in a small-scale apartment complex with a swimming pool on the Saramacca River. In the evening you can make use of the meal service here.
Day 13 to 15 - Groningen
In the refrigerator you will find all the ingredients for an extensive "do-it-yourself" breakfast: fresh rolls, tea, coffee, eggs, toppings and fruit. Before the rolls go into the oven and the coffee simmers, you can take a dip in the pool. Anoeska, the manager, is happy to inform you about the possibilities for excursions. An early morning boat trip on the Saramacca River is highly recommended. Getting up early is rewarded; the mysterious morning mist above the river and the not yet too bright sun provide beautiful pictures. It is also the time when the monkeys and birds show themselves best. It is pleasant to wake up with a cup of coffee or tea on board. You can also take a bike ride to a local warung in Groningen or to the nearby sloth sanctuary. Due to the lack of cycle paths, cycling in the dark is not recommended. That is why we also recommend the meal service at the apartment complex for this evening.
On the last day you will be picked up by a driver for the next tour to Amatopo.
Day 15 to 19 - Amatopo Rainforest Retreat
Our driver will pick you up for a transfer to Zorg en Hoop Airport. From this small airport, located just outside the center of Paramaribo, your plane will depart for the Amatopo Rainforest Retreat. Soon after takeoff, you'll be flying over a vast broccoli field, with rivers winding their way through it.
Amatopo Rainforest Retreat is Suriname's newest luxury jungle retreat. The resort is situated on the banks of a beautiful, wide stretch of the Corantijn River, which forms the border with Guyana. From the resort, you have unparalleled views of the rock formations, rapids, and the completely untouched rainforest. You are surrounded by pristine nature and abundant wildlife. During your stay, comprehensive day programs are offered, led by professional guides. All meals are served in the restaurant with breathtaking river views, and you can end the day with a drink at the Topo Bar. On the last day, you fly back to the city after lunch and arrive back at Hotel Torarica in the afternoon.
