A beautiful two-day trip to Brownsberg and Ston Island. Not too far from the city, yet a truly inland experience. Unique flora and fauna on both the mountain and the lake.
Travel information
Brownsberg and Ston Island
Brownsberg and nearby Ston Island are an ideal destination close to the city for anyone who wants to get a good impression of the Amazon jungle without having to travel too far inland. Here you can enjoy a hilly landscape and beautiful waterfalls. The trips to the waterfalls lead straight through the jungle and are rewarded with ice-cold water where you can cool off. The view from the Brownsberg over the Brokopondo reservoir is spectacular. You will spend the night on the lake on Ston Island.
Brokopondo Reservoir
The program reservoir itself is a unique place and feels like a kind of open-air museum in nature. The place really comes alive, especially when the guide tells you the history of the lake. The reservoir is full of fish so you can also try casting a fishing line. In the early morning there is a good chance that you will be woken up by the howler monkeys: a magical sound!

Day to day program
Day 1 - Tour to the waterfalls at Brownsberg
After leaving Paramaribo, we'll make a coffee stop in the savanna area after about an hour's drive. Following the steep road up to the plateau, we'll arrive at the mountain. From here, on a clear day, you'll have a magnificent view of the Van Blommenstein Reservoir. After a short break, we'll set off on foot with our guide towards the lower waterfalls. We'll walk through the lush jungle of the nature park. Along the way, the guide will frequently explain the flora and fauna found here. Anyone who enjoys a refreshing splash of water can stand under the waterfall. The return trip will require a bit more effort, as we'll have to hike back up to the plateau. After a well-deserved lunch, we'll depart by bus in the afternoon for the reservoir. Ston Island, a peninsula on the reservoir, is where we'll spend the night in simple houses with beds and mosquito nets. After dinner, we can enjoy a beautiful starry sky by the campfire.
Day 2 - Reservoir
You'll wake up surrounded by nature to the howling of howler monkeys. Between 6:00 and 6:30 AM, you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise. After breakfast, there's time for fishing, swimming, and/or relaxing. For an additional fee, you can take a short trip across the reservoir by dugout canoe. Kayaks and canoes can also be rented from the manager at Ston Island, allowing you to explore a section of the lake on your own. After lunch, you'll depart for Paramaribo, arriving around 6:00 PM.
