Paramaribo is the capital of Suriname. The city is located on the west bank of the Suriname River, about 10 kilometers from the sea. Paramaribo is the heart of Suriname. Furthermore, there are no cities of such size in the entire country. About half of the country's total population lives in the city or in the surrounding suburbs. The number of residents is approximately 250.000 people. Paramaribo was once called the most beautiful city in South America. The colonial white wooden buildings give the center a special appearance. The city center has been on the World Heritage List since 2002 UNESCO. Since this nomination, renovation and repair work has been regularly carried out on colonial buildings.
History
After a long struggle for power against the English, the Zeelanders chose the trading post 'Parmirbo' over 'Thorarica'. The settlement 'Nieuw Middelburg' was expanded at this location, where the former English fort was also built. The name was soon replaced by Paramaribo. The fort was named 'Zeelandia'. Later, many wealthy plantation owners came and moved into imposing buildings on the Waterkant. The square (nowadays Independence Square) was surrounded by striking buildings including a governor's residence (the current presidential residence), the town hall (now the Ministry of Finance) and the Court of Justice. These buildings still give Paramaribo a photogenic appearance today.
