Green Heritage Fund Suriname Foundation
We donate annually to Green Heritage Fund Suriname Foundation. We thereby support their activities that help promote and protect Suriname's green image and cultural heritage. The foundation is committed to a number of programs:
- Education & research
All activities of the foundation aim to increase the general public's awareness and understanding of environmental issues. They are aimed at sustainable development and at the conservation and wise use of nature and natural resources in Suriname. - Green community development
One of the goals of the GHFS is to promote the recovery and revival of cultural awareness. That awareness includes the dimensions of Surinamese culture that embody positive values and practices, as well as indigenous knowledge about the environment. - Dolphin program
Since 2005, a group of local volunteers has been collecting basic data on the wild dolphin population Sotalia guianensisin the estuary of the Suriname River. This dolphin program includes baseline data collection, training of volunteers and other stakeholders, and provision of information to the general public. - Xenarthra program
The Xenarthra is the order of animals that includes sloths (2 species), armadillos (9 species), and anteaters (3 species). The foundation's Xenarthra program is concerned with the shelter, care, rehabilitation and release of these animals. This means that orphaned and distressed animals are temporarily adopted.
Snake Patrol Suriname Foundation
A hose in your garden or even inside your house? This sometimes happens if you live in Suriname. Many people in Suriname have an enormous fear of snakes. Once such an animal enters human habitat, it will rarely make it out alive. Dick Lock has been organizing for a number of years herping tours in Suriname for tourists. Studying reptiles and amphibians during a Suriname trip is becoming increasingly popular, in addition to bird watching.
Education about snakes in Suriname by SPS
Unfortunately, the growing popularity of these tours came to an abrupt end quite suddenly due to the outbreak of Covid-19. After the lockdown, Dick and a team of enthusiastic nature guides founded a non-profit organization in Suriname: Snake Patrol Suriname (SPS). The goal of SPS is to prevent residents in Suriname from continuing to kill snakes. Providing education increases knowledge and creates more respect and understanding. In addition, people can contact the foundation to remove animals in a responsible manner if they cause nuisance or fear. The foundation depends on donations and gifts. Since last year, Suriname Holidays has registered as a donor to SPS. Also is our office in Haarlem the pick-up point for their bags. The beautiful linen bags for sale for €6,95 each. The proceeds go to SPS.

Urban recovery
Suriname Holidays is a friend of Stadsherstel Amsterdam
As a friend of Stadsherstel, we make an important contribution to the preservation of monumental and iconic heritage in and around the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The building where we are located in Haarlem is also owned by Stadsherstel. Urban Restoration Amsterdam saves monuments and iconic buildings by carefully restoring them, giving them a suitable destination and renting them out. The buildings are retained, which guarantees a good state of maintenance. The organization makes an important contribution to:
• preserving built heritage for future generations
• quality of life of cities and villages
• accessibility of monuments
• preservation of the restoration craft
Since its founding in 1956, Stadsherstel has saved 600 buildings in and around the Defense Line of Amsterdam. Buildings that were sometimes already scheduled for demolition and that Stadsherstel saved because of their historical importance or their iconic, monumental value.
The Friends of Stadsherstel Association, affiliated with the organization, has more than 2500 friends and has been supporting the restoration work of Stadsherstel for more than 35 years.

Urban Recovery Suriname Foundation
Suriname Holidays is a friend of the Paramaribo Urban Recovery Foundation
Urban Recovery Suriname Foundation was founded in 2011 as a result of the 'Twinning Project Monument Care' between the Built Heritage Foundation Suriname (SGES) and Stadsherstel Amsterdam NV.
Stadsherstel Suriname is a restorative company that purchases, restores and operates historic buildings in a sustainable manner. The goal is to preserve Suriname's unique buildings. In addition to monuments, Urban Restoration Suriname also focuses on characteristic historic buildings without monument status, but which provide visual support in the old city center.
The inner city of Paramaribo has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2002. The many monuments largely determine Paramaribo's unique character and are, for that reason, a major draw for tourists. However, the inner city has been losing popularity as a residential and working area for quite some time, and many monumental buildings are falling into disrepair. Due to these factors, the inner city threatens to become a ghost town in the evening hours. Naturally, this does not benefit the city's living and working functions. A balance must be struck in Paramaribo's functions, and the city must once again become attractive for both living and working.
