Back-to-basic Day-to-day program

Day 1 - Travel to Pingpe via Atjoni

From Paramaribo, you'll drive to the canoe harbor of Atjoni in about 2,5 hours. Along the way, you'll pass small villages and settlements of Amerindian and Creole people. Upon arrival in Atjoni, you can stretch your legs and enjoy lunch. Meanwhile, the canoe will be loaded for the boat trip to Jungle Resort Pingpe. After lunch, you'll travel for approximately 3,5 hours along the beautiful Upper Suriname River to Pingpe; the duration depends partly on the river level. During the trip, you'll see many villages along the river and can enjoy the beautiful surroundings. After your welcome at Jungle Resort Pingpe and settling into your lodge, you'll have time to swim or relax. After dinner, you'll meet the local staff, and the guide will tell you more about Saramaccan culture, the language, the island, and the next day's itinerary.

Day 2 - Forest walk to Camp Anjoemara

After breakfast you will sail by canoe to the village of Pingpe, where your back-to-basic experience begins. You and your guide will walk deep into the pristine jungle. After a 4 to 5 hour walk you will arrive at a large creek where a simple camp, camp Anjoemara, has been set up. During the walk the guide will inform you about the flora & fauna and the customs in the jungle. You can enjoy swimming and bathing in the creek, but you can also take up the challenge of catching an Anjoemara (large predatory fish). After dinner you can enjoy a campfire and the tranquility of the jungle before rocking to sleep in your hammock.

Day 3 - Free day at Pingpe

After breakfast and dismantling the camp, you will walk back to the village of Pingpe in approximately 3 to 4 hours. There you will be taken back to the resort by canoe. You have the afternoon free and can recover from all the efforts. After dinner, the locals will treat you to a special evening full of culture. Singing, dancing and rhythm are the key words and participating yourself is highly appreciated.

Day 4 - Visit the villages of Semoisie, Asindonhopo and Djumu

Early in the morning, you'll travel by dugout canoe to the village of Semoisi. Here, you'll visit the local primary school, attended by children from both villages. Afterward, you'll return to Jungle Resort Pingpe, where breakfast awaits you. In the afternoon, you'll travel by dugout canoe to the village of Asindohopo, located on the Pikin Rio River. This is the village of the Granman people. You'll take a village walk and visit the local radio station. After the walk, you'll sail to the beautiful Tapawatra Sula (rapids), where you can swim and enjoy a natural massage pool. You'll have a picnic lunch on one of the rocks in the sula. On the way back to the resort, you'll visit the Djumu health center.

After dinner you will take an evening trip with the canoe. The guide lets the canoe flow with the current of the river, so you can enjoy the jungle sounds, the starry sky and spotting caimans in peace.

Day 5 - Return trip to Paramaribo

After breakfast, leave by canoe for Atjoni. You can navigate this downstream in approximately 2,5 hours. You can enjoy a delicious lunch again on the boat or on Atjoni itself before transferring to the bus. After the bus ride of approximately 2 hours you will arrive in Paramaribo.

Day to day program without hammock overnight stay

Day 1: Paramaribo – Jungle Resort Pingpe

Depart by bus from Paramaribo, where you will be picked up from your accommodation (within Paramaribo city center) between 8:00 and 8:30 AM. The bus journey to Atjoni takes approximately 2,5 hours. Once in Atjoni, you can stretch your legs and have lunch before boarding the dugout canoe for a long boat trip on the Upper Suriname River. The duration depends greatly on the river level, but will generally take about 4 hours. Be sure to wear good sun protection and bring shawls. During the trip, you will pass through several villages and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. You will also see locals going about their daily activities, such as washing and fishing.
Upon arrival at the jungle resort there is an opportunity to swim in the river or relax on the island. After dinner you will meet the local staff and the guide will tell you more about the Saramaccan culture, the language, interesting facts about the island, the environment and the program of the next day.

Day 2: Hiking through the pristine jungle and an evening trip by canoe

After a hearty breakfast, you'll join your guide for a jungle walk through the pristine forest and past the villagers' fields. During the walk, the guide will provide detailed information about the various (medicinal) plants, trees, animals, and customs of the jungle. You'll also see how the villagers work hard to grow their food on their plots. In the afternoon, you'll return to the resort where a delicious lunch awaits you. Afterward, there's time to recover from the walk and enjoy a refreshing swim in the river. After dinner, you'll take an evening canoe trip. The guide will guide the canoe along the river's current, allowing you to enjoy the silence of the jungle—or perhaps its magnificent sounds—the starry sky, or spot caimans.

Day 3: Enjoying the Tapawatra Sula and meeting the Saramaccan culture

After breakfast, you'll travel by dugout canoe to the village of Asindohopo, located on the Pikin Rio River. This is the village of the Granman. You'll take a village walk and visit the local radio station. After the walk, you'll sail to the beautiful Tapawatra Sula (rapids), where you can swim and enjoy a natural massage. You'll have a picnic lunch on one of the rocks in the sula. On the way back to the resort, your guide will visit the Djumu health center, a central medical center for the surrounding area. After dinner, the locals will treat you to an evening full of culture: song, dance, and rhythm are the key elements of this evening. The village women become increasingly enthusiastic as the guests join in. (For groups of 4 or more).

Day 4: Visit to the primary school and climb the Ananasberg

Early in the morning, you'll travel by canoe to the village of Semoisi. Here, you'll visit the local primary school, where children from both villages receive their education. Afterward, you'll sail back to Jungle Resort Pingpe, where breakfast will be waiting for you. After breakfast, you'll travel by canoe to Djumu, where you'll hike the Pineapple Mountains. These mountains are known for their pineapples and offer beautiful views of the surrounding nature. After this hike, you'll return to the resort by canoe for lunch. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. Your last evening will conclude with a campfire on the island and the sharing of wonderful stories.

Day 5: Jungle Resort Pingpe – Paramaribo

After breakfast, you'll depart by dugout canoe to Atjoni. Downstream, the trip is considerably faster. You can enjoy another delicious lunch on the boat or at Atjoni itself before transferring to the bus. After the bus ride, you'll arrive back in Paramaribo by late afternoon.
