The Nickerie district is the westernmost district, situated on the Corantijn River, the border river with Guyana. The largest town in Nickerie is Nieuw Nickerie. The town serves a service function for a large part of the district. Predominantly, many people with a Hindustani background live in this part of Suriname. The landscape is lowland, which is mainly used for the cultivation of rice and bananas. Livestock farming is also an important source of income in this district. Additionally, the area is rich in swamps and mangrove flood forests, making it an exceptionally interesting area for birdwatchers. A trip to the bird-rich Bigi Pan area is worthwhile for bird and nature lovers.
Nieuw Nickerie is also a good base for trips along the Corantijn River towards Wonotobo.
