In Guesthouse La Ressource in Boxel (district Wanica) a home-brewed specialty beer is served. The manager picked up this hobby again in 2020 after having started earlier in the Netherlands.
There are no ingredients available in Suriname, so everything has to be brought in from the Netherlands.
The Dutch period was still marked by experimentation, in Suriname Bertus has found a formula that is appreciated by practically everyone. It is a blond, top-fermented and unfiltered beer that tends towards white beer and to which fresh orange peel from their own garden is added. This ensures a fresh aftertaste with a pleasant bitterness.
Bertus also regularly gets the comment from the locals to expand and market the beer. Given his age (68) and running a guesthouse, he would rather show a young Surinamese the ropes.
Guests of the guesthouse have an advantage, but enthusiasts are always welcome to come along.
A group of Belgian tourists have included a beer tasting at the guesthouse in their program. A lovely garden by the river with a forest edge, excellent catering with local food, a lovely temperature and then that beer. The afternoon could not have been better.
Bertus does not yet have a name for the beer, but suggestions are welcome.
