Drepada Cultural Tour
During this day trip, you'll gain a comprehensive understanding of Saramaccan culture in the Brokopondo district on the lower reaches of the Suriname River. You'll visit the authentic village and learn more about the culture and way of life here in the interior during a walk. Then, you'll visit the workshop where people make the products for Talking Prints. You'll get to work with beautiful fabric to sew your own headwrap. The women are happy to help even if you're unfamiliar with sewing. Once the headwrap is finished, you'll learn various handy knotting techniques for wearing it. Together, you'll enjoy a hot lunch prepared in the village and learn more about the use of traditional plants and herbs in the Maroon community. The day concludes with a refreshing dip in the river.
For those who'd like to do something other than sew a headwrap, there's an alternative program. For children, there's a fun scavenger hunt, with villagers eager to help find the answers.

Background information
When the founder of Talking Prints went on sabbatical to Suriname, a social and creative initiative to offer opportunities to women in Suriname emerged from chance, connection, and a love for craftsmanship. The women of the Maroon community in Drepada have been involved in the initiative from the very beginning. The Saramacca ladies are highly skilled with sewing machines and make various products for the brand, such as tote bags, small bags, and headwraps. When I got in touch with Zoë, she indicated that she would like to take people along for a visit to the village and the studio to connect with the people behind the Talking Prints brand.
