The Brownsberg area is a 6000 hectare nature park, beautifully situated in the tropical rainforest. The Mazaroni plateau is located at an altitude of about 500 meters with a unique view of the mountains and the Brokopondo reservoir. The Brownsberg Nature Park has a high biodiversity. The vegetation consists of different types of undisturbed tropical rainforest, including cloud forest and high forest, interspersed with the occasional splashing waterfall that cascades down from a higher point.
BROWNSBERG NATURAL PARK
In this nature reserve, all 8 species of monkeys found in Suriname can be found: the Surinamese Silk Monkey, the Squirrel Monkey, the White-headed Monkey, the Satan Monkey, the African Capuchin Monkey, the Grey Capuchin Monkey, the Black Spider Monkey, and the Howler Monkey. You may well hear the ominous sound of the Howler Monkey during a visit to Brownsberg. Besides monkeys, other mammals can also be spotted, such as sloths, deer, and very occasionally a jaguar. Many cold-blooded animals, including frogs, lizards, iguanas, and snakes, also live in this area. Additionally, the park is a great place for bird lovers.
